A Cozy Midwinter Simmer Pot Recipe

Simmer pots are one of my favorite ways to celebrate the seasonal holidays. Not only are they a great way to clear out any stagnant energy, but they also leave the house smelling amazing. This winter simmer pot is a fun way to use herbs, spices, and fruit to fill your space with the energy of the Yule season and welcome back the return of the sun.

Yule Simmer Pot Ingredients & Energetics

When crafting a seasonal simmer pot to celebrate Yule and the winter solstice, I like to consider the energetics and correspondences of the fruits, herbs, and spices that are commonly associated with this time of year. Simmer pots are incredibly adaptable to just about any aromatic you want to throw in, so it’s fun to choose your aromatics based on the energy and vibe you want to invoke. 

For this Yule simmer pot, you’ll need…

  • Apple, which is associated with spiritual development, manifesting, and abundance. 
  • Orange, which is associated with energy, creativity, cleansing, and purification. 
  • Ginger, which is associated with increased energy and speeding up manifestation. 
  • Cinnamon, which is associated with abundance, increasing spirituality and energy, manifestation, and protection. 
  • Cloves, which is associated with prosperity, protection, purification, and opening intuition. 
  • Cranberries, which is associated with abundance, healing, love, protection, and rejuvenation. 
  • Pine, which is associated with cleansing, protection, uplifting energy, and promoting good health.

Slice up the apple and orange, roughly chop the ginger, and then toss everything into the biggest pot you have. Fill the pot with water, then bring it to a low boil over medium-high heat. Once it starts to boil, reduce heat to a simmer. 

Let the pot simmer on a back burner, checking on it periodically throughout the day to make sure there’s still water in it. You may also need to adjust the heat to keep it at a simmer. 

The scent will intensify as it simmers and it won’t be long until your entire house smells sweet, aromatic, spicy, and delicious.

A Couple Tips

Never leave your simmer pot simmering unattended. Only get a simmer pot going when you’re going to be home to keep an eye on it from time to time. Simmer pots don’t need to be babysat by any means. But you should check on them throughout the day to monitor water levels. And, of course, you never want to leave the stove on if you’re leaving the house. 

To assist with the clearing of stagnant energy (and smells), open the windows in your home for a bit. If it’s cold where you live, you don’t have to leave them open for long. Once the simmer pot is going, go through and open all the windows in your house for just 10-15 minutes. Then go back through and close them all. I’m always surprised at how fresh my home feels when I do this.

Simmer pots are a great way to use the “scraps” that you might otherwise throw away, like apple peels and cores and citrus peels. You can also use powdered ginger, cinnamon, and cloves instead of whole if that’s what you have on hand. And rosemary is a great alternative to pine if you don’t have a pine tree you can forage from.

How To Manifest Using Your Simmer Pot

Part of the fun of a simmer pot is setting an intention. It’s simple to do but, I like to think, makes a lovely difference. Add all the ingredients to the pot and turn on the heat. Then bring to mind the intention you’d like to set. That can be as simple as clearing any energy that is no longer serving you. Or setting an intention of love and joy if you’re having people over for a party. With your intention in mind, stir your simmer pot either clockwise to call energy in or counterclockwise if you’re intention is to remove or expel energy. 

If you want to take things up a notch, a simmer pot can also be used for manifestation. I like to use bay leaves, which are often used for manifestation purposes. After you add all the ingredients to the pot, take a bay leaf (or several) and write the thing you’re trying to manifest on the bay leaf. 

Hold the bay leaf in your hands, close your eyes, and imagine how it will feel to have your manifestation. If you’re good at visualizing (I am not), then you could spend a few minutes visualizing your manifestation. Once you’ve conjured up all the good feelings your manifestation will bring, place the bay leaf in the pot with the other ingredients. 

Turn the heat on and give the simmer pot a few clockwise stirs to bring the energy and manifestation into your life. 

Then just let the simmer pot do its thing.

Yule Simmer Pot

This Yule simmer pot is a fun, easy way to observe the holiday and celebrate the return of the sun. It’s also a great way to clear stagnant energy and bring a cozy vibe to your home.
Yield: 1 simmer pot

Materials

  • 1 small apple sliced
  • 1 small orange sliced
  • 1-2 inch piece of fresh ginger roughly chopped or sliced
  • 1-2 cinnamon sticks
  • 10-15 whole cloves
  • Handful of fresh cranberries
  • A few sprigs of pine
  • Water

Instructions

  • In a large pot, combine all ingredients. Fill the pot with water so that all the ingredients are covered with several inches of water.
  • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer.
  • Allow the simmer pot to simmer throughout the day, checking on it from time to time. Add more water as needed and give it a stir.
