I love a good sugar scrub and try to use a sugar scrub at least once a month. It’s great for regular exfoliation, which is important during the colder months when my skin tends to get extra dry. And a homemade sugar scrub is also perfect as part of an energy-cleansing shower ritual. This season, I’ve been mixing up this energy-clearing rosemary sugar scrub and I absolutely love the combination.
Rosemary is commonly associated with this time of year. It’s warming, spicy, and has long been associated with remembrance, which makes it particularly appropriate for the Samhain season. Combined with orange and lavender, this sugar scrub smells absolutely divine and uplifting.

Rosemary helps stimulate circulation and support mental alertness and memory. It has an affinity for the respiratory system and skincare. Its uplifting, invigorating scent is perfect to help wake you up in the morning.
Known as the herb of remembrance, rosemary can help you remember your dreams, your loved ones who have passed on, and the love you have for others. It is often used in protection spells and is great for energy cleansing.
Lavender helps to soothe and relax. It is a very gentle and healing essential oil that is emotionally balancing, clearing, and opening. It is often used in healing and self-love spells.
Orange essential oil is such an uplifting scent. It promotes positive thinking, boosts creativity, and helps you let go of whatever you might be holding on to. Orange is also often used in cleansing and purifying spells.
How To Make A Sugar Scrub
Making a sugar scrub is so easy, you most likely have everything you need to make the base right now. At its core, it really just is a combination of sugar and oil. Everything else is honestly just an extra.
For my base, I like to use ⅓ cup of sweet almond oil or olive oil. To that, I add ⅓ cup of raw sugar and 1 tablespoon of honey.
That’s it. That alone will create a luxurious sugar scrub that will exfoliate, moisturize, and balance your skin.
From there, I like to add in my herbal extras depending on what I’m in the mood for. For this sugar scrub, I added 2 drops each of rosemary, lavender, and orange essential oils.
I love essential oils and tend to err on the conservative side when it comes to using them. They are powerful and potent, and a little goes a long way. It may feel tempting to use more essential oils to get a really strong scent. But it’s not only unnecessary, it can cause irritation.
If you use essential oils regularly, you may find that you start to go a bit nose blind to them. I worked (briefly) for an essential oil company several years ago and I still feel like I don’t smell essential oils as strongly as I did before working there. But I know I’m still getting all the benefits of these amazing essential oils even if they don’t smell as strongly as I think they should.
Essential oils are also expensive (at least the good ones are) because they require so much plant material to create the oils. So using them sparingly not only saves me a bit of money, but it also shows respect for the plant material
A Quick Energy-Cleansing Sugar Scrub Shower Ritual
As I mentioned, I love to use a sugar scrub as part of an energy-cleansing shower ritual. It’s perfect any time I’m feeling a little run down, low energy, overstimulated, wrung out from a social interaction, or just need a little boost.
After washing my body, I’ll step out of the stream of the shower as much as I can. Then, I take the sugar scrub mixture in my hands, close my eyes, and take a deep inhale, really experiencing the scent of the essential oils in the scrub. I’ll take a few breaths like this, focusing on my breath and really grounding into the present moment.
In this grounded, focused state, I say (either to myself or sometimes out loud):
I release any energy that doesn’t belong to me and send it back with love.
I release any energy that is not serving me and replace it with pure light and love.
Then, I take the scrub and start rubbing it onto my body. Starting with my limbs and working my way to my torso. As I scrub, I imagine the sugar scrub pulling any negative or foreign energy out of my body and dissolving it into the scrub as it dissolves on my skin.
I keep doing this, breathing deeply, until I’ve used up all my scrub and/or covered my whole body.
Then, I step back under the shower stream and I imagine the water literally washing the negative and foreign energy away from my body and sending it down the drain.
Once I’m done with my shower, I like to gently pat myself dry so I don’t wipe away all the oil. That way my skin stays soft and just lightly scented.
