I’ve been playing around with making herbal electuaries lately. First of all, the word “electuary” is super fun to say. But also, making electuaries has turned out to be a super easy way to have an herbal blend on hand that’s both delicious and convenient. This Herbal Golden Milk Electuary is like having a nourishing, healing “instant” golden milk ready to whip up at a moment’s notice.

What Is An Herbal Electuary
An electuary, in its most simple form, is just powdered herbs mixed with honey. Electuaries have been used throughout history as a way to make herbal medicine more palatable.
Honey has a number of health benefits of its own and when combined with powdered herbs, you get an herbal preparation that’s potent, stores well, tastes good, and is easy to use.
You can take electuaries by the spoonful but I prefer to use them as a sort of “instant tea” by stirring them into hot water or milk, like with this Golden Milk Electuary.
Immune-Boosting Golden Milk Electuary Ingredients
To make this Golden Milk Electuary, I started with some of the classic herbs found in golden milk like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper.
Then I added astragalus and reishi to provide that extra immune-boosting support. I love this combination and rely on it regularly to help keep my immune system strong and supported all winter long.
Astragalus is an adaptogen and immunomodulator, which means it helps build and restore overall vitality to the body and strengthen the immune system response. It’s a tonic herb that can help improve energy. Plus, it’s quite mild tasting.
Reishi has immune-enhancing properties and also acts as a general health tonic. It’s high in antioxidants and can help improve sleep and ease chronic pain.
I also included a bit of vanilla extract, because just about everything is better with vanilla extract.
I mixed everything together with just enough honey to create a thick paste consistency. You can add more honey if you like to make it the consistency you prefer. And that’s it! The electuary is done and ready to go whenever I want a cozy, nourishing drink that also supports wellness.
To use, I combined two tablespoons of the electuary with 12 ounces of milk. Any milk you prefer works. You could even use water but the milk makes it extra creamy and indulgent tasting.
You can store the electuary in the fridge for 6-12 months. However, I highly doubt it will last that long once you try it. There’s nothing better than having a nourishing mug of something hot ready to go all winter long.
Immune-Boosting Golden Milk Electuary
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons powdered turmeric
- 4 tablespoons powdered astragalus
- 2 tablespoon powdered Reishi
- 1 tablespoon powdered cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons powdered ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon powdered cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon powdered black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon powdered nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup honey
Instructions
- Add all ingredients into a bowl. Slowly stir until combined. It may seem like it’s not enough honey but keep at it. It will all combine. If it's being extra stubborn, add more honey one tablespoon at a time until it reaches a consistency you like.
- Transfer the electuary to a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store in the fridge for 6-12 months.
- To make golden milk, combine 2 tablespoons of the electuary with 12 ouncesof milk (any kind) in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring often, until combined and the mixture is steaming. Pour into a mug and enjoy.
I can’t get enough hot drinks when it’s cold outside, so I’m looking forward to having this immune-boosting electuary ready to go all season long. And if you’re interested in other herbal recipes that support winter wellness, take a look at these blog posts:
