What Is An Electuary
If you aren’t familiar with electuaries, you’re in for an herbal treat. Put simply, electuaries are a powdered herbs combined with just enough honey to create a thick paste. Historically, electuaries were often used to make bitter, pungent herbs more palatable. But they can be made with basically any herb or herb blend you like.
How To Make An Electuary
To make an electuary, start with a medium bowl. You want one that’s bigger than you think you’ll need in order to avoid making a mess.
Combine the herbs you plan on using in the bowl and whisk them so they’re evenly distributed.
Next, you’ll add the honey. You can eyeball this, adding honey a little bit at a time until you get to the thickness you like. But I find that a 1:1 ratio of herbs to honey is a good starting point. So if you’ve got about ¼ cup of powdered herbs, you’ll want to start with ¼ cup of honey.
Start incorporating the honey and herbs by stirring slowly and patiently. It takes a while for the ingredients to blend together and if you stir too vigorously you’ll just end up pushing the powdered herbs out of the bowl. (I know this from experience.) So take it slow and trust that the mixture will ever come together.
If the mixture still seems too thick, feel free to add more honey, a teaspoon or two at a time, until you reach a thick but scoopable consistency.
How To Use An Electuary
Electuaries have a long shelf-life and can be taken either straight by the spoonful or turned into a delicious hot beverage, which is why I call this recipe an “instant” ashwagandha chai.
- Step 1: Bring 8 ounces of water to a boil.
- Step 2: Pour the freshly boiled water into a bug and stir in about a tablespoon of the ashwagandha chai electuary.
- Step 3: Top with some frothed milk for a creamy, delicious finish.
It doesn’t get much easier than that! You can store your electuary in the fridge for at least 6 months, which means you’ll never be more than a few minutes away from a warm, stress-busting, anxiety-soothing mug of ashwagandha chai.
