The Herbs In This Spiced Digestive Tea Blend

In the colder winter months, my body craves the warmth of the classic culinary spices we all know and love. These spices are associated with the cold season for good reason. They warm our bodies and help stimulate healthy circulation and digestion.

I also tend to experience more anxiousness during the cold, dark months of the year. In addition to being generally unpleasant, that kind of nervous tension can have a negative impact on digestion.

That’s why I’ve combined herbs that soothe and support the nervous system along with warming spices that stimulate and support circulation and digestion for this spiced digestive tea blend.

  • Chamomile is wonderful for calming a nervous stomach and easing gas, bloating, cramping, and heartburn. It’s mildly sedative and helps soothe anxiety and worry.
  • Tulsi is an adaptogen that helps the body deal with and adapt to stress. Its volatile oils help stimulate digestion and ease indigestion.
  • Ginger one of the best herbs to support digestion, ginger stimulates digestion and gastric emptying, helping to relieve that heavy feeling after meals. It also helps enhance the absorption of nutrients in the digestive tract.
  • Cinnamon helps warm you up by stimulating circulation. It also stimulates cold, stagnant digestion, helping to relieve gas, bloating, indigestion, and cramping.
  • Fennel supports healthy digestion and is most well-known for relieving excess gas and soothing digestive discomfort.
  • Cardamom is known to stoke digestive fire, relieving stagnation, enhancing function, and aiding in the absorption of nutrients.

How To Make The Herbal Tea Blend

When creating a tea blend, I always use “parts” as my measurement. That makes it easy to scale up or down the recipe depending on how much I want to make.

Start by selecting what your “part” measurement will be. This can be a tablespoon for a smaller batch or up to a cup if you want to make a big batch.

In a large bowl, measure out each herb. Using a spoon or your hands, mix the herbs together to make sure everything is evenly distributed.

Transfer the herbal tea blend to a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Label the jar with the name of the herbal tea blend, the herbs in the blend, and the date it was made.

Store the herbal tea, tightly sealed, away from direct heat and light. Herbal tea blends can be stored for up to about a year before they lose their potency.

How To Brew The Perfect Cup Of Tea

Brewing the perfect cup of tea at home takes a bit more effort than simply dropping a tea bag into a cup of boiled water. But the results are worth it.

To brew this herbal tea, you’ll need a small fine mesh sieve, a French press, or (my personal favorite) a tea infuser.

Place 1 ½ tablespoons of the tea blend into the French press or tea infuser. If you’re using a small fine mesh sieve, place the tea blend in a glass jar with a lid.

Pour freshly boiled water over the tea blend, using about 12 ounces (1 ½ cups) of water. Cover the tea and let it steep for 15-30 minutes. The longer you steep it, the stronger the infusion will be but it will also bring out some of the bitter properties of chamomile. This isn’t a bad thing and, in fact, chamomile’s bitterness is part of the reason it helps support digestion. But if you’re not used to drinking bitter teas, start with just 15 minutes and see how you like it.

Once you’re done steeping, strain the tea by lowering the plunger in the French press, removing the tea strainer, or carefully strain the brewed tea from the glass jar through a fine mesh strainer and into a mug.

This tea is pretty tasty just the way it is but it’s even more delightful with a bit of honey or maple syrup and a splash of your preferred milk.

Enjoy a mug of this tea after meals to support digestion, in the evening to help wind down before bed, or any time you could use a cozy drink that’s both soothing and supportive.
